We caught up with Vampberry to talk about where she takes her inspirations and her dreams.

WHO'S BEHIND VAMPBERRY?

My name is Gaida. I’m a saudi artist based in Riyadh. I work primarily with Graphite in addition to pastels, charcoal, and mixed media. Through these mediums I love to create collages of conjoined art pieces that explore different themes such as identity in a dreamy nostalgic settings. My art is drawn from my personal experiences but the way i translate it is inspired by the art around me whether they’re visual artworks, music, books, movies, or animations.

ICHIGOODESIGN: Your art has this very specific universe: dark, feminine, emotional. Where does it all come from?

Vampberry: I base the majority of my art on myself, my experiences, and my thoughts. I never intentionally set a specific approach or tone to my artworks, I engage with it as if its journalling so it just feels like a transparent direct portal between myself and my art and it creates a scrapebook of my memories and what i want to subconsciously communicate to the viewers.

ICHIGOODESIGN: When did you start drawing, and what was the first thing you ever drew obsessively?

Vampberry: I’ve always been the artist kid but when i first started seriously drawing back in 6th grade i was sooo obsessed with fashion design, bratz dolls, monster high characters and recreating makeover games on paper. I would come back from school and set my colored pencils on my table and draw until evening

ICHIGOODESIGN: Anime has clearly left a mark on your aesthetic. What show or character changed the way you see art and storytelling?

Vampberry: I’ve always been obsessed with fluid simple animation where it seems to construct dimension and create movements with as little lines as possible. It has indirectly played a key factor into the stylization of my art. My favorite examples of this are: c.bebop and samurai.c!

ICHIGOODESIGN: Your illustrations feel like they carry a lot of emotion. Is there a quote or a line from something you've watched or read that lives in your head rent free?

Vampberry: Virginia Woolf’s The Waves has been living in my head for years and had quite drastically changed my entire perspective on my life. Most notably this quote where the narrator describes the peace of acceptance and how the small things in his day are the grounding anchors to his life.

ICHIGOODESIGN: If your art style were a playlist, what would be the first three songs on it?

Vampberry: “Frou-Frou foxes in midsummer fires” - cocteau twins

“The world spins” - Julee fox

“Milk” - Sweet Trip

ICHIGOODESIGN: What's your current obsession?

Vampberry: my current obsession is my studio. I recently renovated a spare room from A to Z to create a dedicated space for creating everything ranging from illustration, pottery, woodwork, and painting. I love to light my candles, drink my matcha, play my music, and just sit down to draw from evening until dawn.

ICHIGOODESIGN: You collaborated with ichigoodesign on HER AND I. What does the concept of "GIRLHOOD” mean to you personally?

Vampberry: It was truly such an honor to collaborate with ichigoodesign I loved the concept right away!! What GIRLHOOD means to me especially in that setting is unwaveringly being there for each other and embracing the flaws, ambitions, downfalls and growth of each other. It’s that timeless bond that stays resilient in continuing to care when life pulls you in different directions as you grow together not apart.

ICHIGOODESIGN: What's your dream and what kind of world do you want it to live in?

Vampberry: my dream is to open an art academy that is accessible and affordable to everyone from all ages and backgrounds. An afternoon school where we ingrain the importance of practicing what you love freely and building the skills to manage it in the everyday world. Thats the kind of world where i want to live in where everyone is free to do what they love supported by a nourishing community.
